Arsenal were aiming to win the League and Cup double for the second time in their history, having achieved this before in 1993, only five players from Arsenal victory in the 1993 fa cup final were in the side today.

Newcastle attempted to pressurise Arsenal early on in the hope of upsetting the favourites but the Arsenal side were in a defiant mood.The fans only had to wait until the 23rd minute to see Arsenal open the scoring when Marc Overmars stabbed the ball past Shay Given, the Newcastle goalkeeper.

Though Newcastle did a few chances in the game, the contest was virtually over when Nicolas Anelka slipped the ball under Shay Given in the 69th minute to make it 2-0, but Newcastle carried the fight to the final whistle in the hope of getting that consolation goal, but luck was against them.
