This was the first time in their history that Middlesbrough contested for the FA Cup and a few months prior they also lost in the final of the League Cup and also got relegated from the top division, they were up against a Chelsea side who haven’t won the FA Cup trophy for 27 years.

Chelsea came blazing out of the blocks when Roberto Di Matteo fired at the Middlesbrough goal and it came off the crossbar into the net, and there was only 42 seconds on the clock, at the time this was a record for the quickest ever goal in a FA Cup Final. Late in the first half Middlesbrough did manage to score but the referee blew the whistle for offside so it was disallowed.

Chelsea virtually controlled the game throughout and sealed their victory when Eddie Newton scoring Chelsea’s second of the match.
