This was Manchester United third final in as many years and were aiming for the double (League and FA Cup) to become the first club to achieve the double twice, they had won the 1996 league title a few days prior to this final.

Both teams were apprehensive as neither goalkeeper were troubled much during the whole game. But it wasn’t until the 85th minute, just as everyone was expecting extra-time that Manchester United had a corner in which the Liverpool goalkeeper David James punched away the ball, only for it to land just outside the penalty area by Eric Cantonna of Manchester United who fired through the crowded area to score the only goal of the final.
