The 1985 FA Cup Final was contested by Manchester United and holders Everton at Wembley Stadium. United won by a single goal, scored in extra time by Norman Whiteside.
After 78 minutes of less than spectacular football, the referee (a retired police inspector Peter Willis) sent off Kevin Moran after a tackle on Peter Reid making Moran the first player to be shown the Red Card in an FA Cup Final. The tackle was at worst a booking as Reid’s momentum had made it appear worse than it was. Moran could not believe he was going to be sent off and such was his anger he had to be restrained by Frank Stapleton.
Had Everton won the match they would have completed an unprecedented Treble of League, FA Cup and European Cup Winners’ Cup.
All of Manchester United’s players (including the substitute who played) had been capped at full international level, making them the first FA Cup winning team to consist entirely of players who had gained full international recognition.
