Arsenal were appearing in there third consecutive FA Cup Final, while West Ham United were plying their trade in the second division. So it wasn’t a surprise that Arsenal were extremely strong favourites for the cup.

The only goal of the game came in the 13th minute when Alan Devonshire of West Ham in possession swiftly moved the ball down along the left wing, the ball was crossed into the Arsenal penalty area to David Cross, whose shot was palmed away by Pat Jennings in the Arsenal goal, only for Stuart Pearson who shot at the Arsenal goal but his shot went straight across the goalmouth to Trevor Brooking and he flicked a header past Pat Jennings.

Arsenal continued to dominate the game and had the majority of the possession, but were unable to break the defence of West Ham United. This was the 3rd time in the past 8 FA Cup finals that a team from outside the top division have won the FA Cup, and up to 2010 the last time that this has happened.
