A shock result as at the time Leeds United were the FA Cup holders and were quite a force at the time while Sunderland were only a second division team, this was the first time in 42 years that a second division side has won the FA Cup.

Sunderland came out attacking and were not afraid to go into tackles with some ferocity, maybe it was this style that stopped Leeds United playing their usual style of a nice flowing play. The only goal of the game came in the 31st minute with a goal from Ian Porterfield who shot it home from 12 yards.

Leeds tried in vain to equalise but the Sunderland goalkeeper Jim Montgomery stopped all that came his way. This was the only time that the ball used in the final was coloured orange.
