Neither side had won the FA Cup before, and with the sides finishing 2nd and 3rd in the league, it was a good recipe for an exciting encounter.

Jack Charlton opened the scoring for Leeds with a header in the 20th minute and with Gary Sprake fumbling the ball from a Peter Houseman shot allowed Chelsea to equalise 4 minutes before half-time. With 6 Minutes on the clock left Allan Clarke headed the ball towards goal but it hit the crossbar and Leeds Mick Jones was first to react and scored to what many would of thought as the winning goal, but 2 minutes later, Chelsea John Hollins in a attacking move crossed the ball over to Ian Hutchinson who scored and put the game into extra-time. No goals were scored during extra-time.

This was the first time since 1912 and the first time at Wembley where a replay was necessary and also the first since Wembley opened in 1923 that a FA Cup Final was played at another venue, as the replay was at Old Trafford.

A badly tempered affair for the replay, which when it was analysed during the 2000’s, one of the English top referees stated that during the game there should of been 6 red cards and 20 Yellow cards.

Bonnetti in the Chelsea goal was still feeling the pain of an early challenge on him when Leeds United Mick Jones scored the opening goal after 35 minutes, Leeds continued to take control for most of the game but the scoreline remained until the 78th minute when Peter Osgood scored with a fine diving header. After 90 minutes the score was 1-1, so extra-time was needed, a Ian Hutchinson long throw-in ended up by Dave Webb to head home the ball for Chelsea, who held on to the final whistle and lift the trophy.
