West Ham United : Standen, Bond, Burkett, Bovington, Brown, Moore, Braborook, Boyce, Byrne, Hurst, Sissons

Preston North End : Kelly, Ross, Smith, Lawton, Singleton, Kendall, Wilson, Ashworth, Dawson, Spavin, Holden.

It didn’t take long for the underdogs in this encounter to open their account with just 10 minutes on the clock, the West Ham goalkeeper Jim Standen fumbled the bal which allowed Preston’s Doug Holden to poke the ball into the net.

But the lead was not for long as West Ham replied through John Sissons and a low drive into the far post, though West Ham had a few chances to take the lead the majority of the play was controlled by the second division outfit Preston and their pressure was rewarded with a headed corner with 5 minutes of the first half remaining.

The second half began with West Ham showing their class a bit more and on the 50th minute mark they were awarded a corner and Geoff Hurst headed the ball towards the top corner. Preston’s goalkeeper Alan Kelly dived for the ball but it just missed his fingers instead the ball hit the underside of the bar then bounced down against the back Alan Kelly head and go over the line for the equaliser.

Both sides had periods of pressure and chances to go into the lead, but it wasn’t until the dying seconds of the match, when Ronnie Boyce headed home the decisive goal.
