Besides 100,000 spectators this FA Cup Final was graced by the presence of Prince Philip and the Queen, it was Prince Philip that was introduced to the teams before the start. 1959 was the first time that at the start the two captains exchanged banners (Pennants).

Nottingham Forest were soon off the mark with Imlach swiftly moving down the wing crossed the ball and Dwight shot fired past the Luton goalkeeper. 5 Minutes later Forest extended their lead with a cracking header from Wilson. With Forest two up they kept pressing for a third but unfortunately the first goalscorer Dwight had to be carried off and was unable to take part in anymore of the match, in 1959 substitutes were not allowed, so Forest continued the match with just 10 men.

The second half saw Luton exert pressure on the weakened Nottingham Forest side and clawed a goal back through Pacey but despite further pressure Luton were unable to get past the Forest defence and ended up losing 2-1.
