Newcastle United 3 (Milburn, Mitchell, Hannah) Manchester City 1 (Johnstone)

1951 and 1952 saw the visit of Newcastle to Wembley and here in 1955 they made the trip south for another final, on this occasion they are to play Manchester City. Jackie Milburn created a record here which was held until 1997 when he scored the opener after just 45 seconds from a corner.

Manchester City went down to 10 men when Meadows went off injured, but with 10 man city they levelled just before half-time, when Johnstone put the ball in the net with a diving header.

Newcastle started the 2nd half with some zest and within 15 minutes of the re-start Mitchell slipped the ball under Trautmann to put the geordies 2-1 up.

Mitchell had a hand in the 3rd for Newcastle when some spectacular ball control passed 2 of City’s players and then a lay off to Hannah to score.
