Wolverhampton Wanderers started the 1939 FA Cup Final as hot favourites in front of a crowd of 99,000, they were lying second in the league, whereas Portsmouth were struggling against relegation.
Bert Barlow opened the scoring for Portsmouth at the half hour, ironically Barlow had started the season as Wolves player, and just before half time Portsmouth went 2 nil up with a goal from John Anderson,the second half began with a third for Portsmouth (Cliff Parker), with Portsmouth coasting to victory Wolverhampton grabbed a consolation goal after 54 minutes, and Portsmouth sealed the victory with Cliff Parker getting his second of the game at 71 minutes.
Due to World War 2 this was the last FA Cup Final until 1946, so Portsmouth held the cup for 7 years.
