Portsmouth opened the scoring in a final that was played in horrendous weather, a curling shot from Rutherford beat the City goalkeeper Frank Swift.
With Portsmouth still leading and just 17 minutes on the clock, Portsmouth Jimmy Allen went off injured and as substitutes were not permitted in this era it gave Manchester City a man advantage. This soon was shown as Matt Busby took a throw in and with the ball passed through to Tilson who slotted it home to equalise. With two minutes left, Tilson rifled home another goal to deny Portsmouth.
The match referee was Stanley Rous, in his second to last game that he was referee, he later became the Secretary of FIFA (1961-1974)
