Wembley Stadium April 23rd
|Newcastle United 2 (Allen 2) Arsenal 1 (John)|
92,000 supporters saw Arsenal take an early lead through a goal by Bob John, it was then thought it would be a stroll in the park for a very fancied Arsenal side. Newcastle equalised with 7 minutes of the first half left, but it was a contentious goal. Photographic evidence shown after the game showed that before Jack Allen had scored after the ball had crossed the dead ball line, Jack Allen was left unmarked because all the Arsenal players assumed it went out and was waiting for the whistle, the only whistle they heard was from the Ref giving a goal.
Arsenal never recovered from this incident and conceded a second goal in the 72nd minute. Newcastle’s win was the first time a team who scored first in the final went on to lose.
